Pain and melancholy sporadically emerge, with both depression and pain seemingly entangled in a perplexing dance — which begets the other, is it depression sowing pain or pain germinating depression? What remains incontrovertible is the enigmatic nature of this situation, cast in shades of gray. How did the epidemic of depression emerge? And why particularly in this era? What can inject vibrancy into this prevailing gloom?

When someone claims that depression doesn’t exist, it’s important to respond thoughtfully and provide accurate information. Here’s a possible response:

“I understand that there are various perspectives on the nature of depression. While it’s true that discussions around mental health can be complex, there is a substantial body of scientific research and clinical evidence that supports the existence of depression as a real and serious condition. Depression isn’t simply a matter of feeling sad; it involves a range of emotional, cognitive, and physical symptoms that can significantly impact a person’s daily life.”

Depression acts akin to an unexpected viral intrusion, a sudden descent that chills and immobilizes, leaving you inert. It strips away the zest for life, the ability to function, to stir, to unveil the world through open eyes, to heed its sounds. It swiftly coerces an inclination towards isolation, an urge to close off, to seal away from auditory or sensory intake. Everything becomes irksome. Even the energy to retaliate against vexing remarks dissipates. A yearning whispers, ‘If only they could fade into the void’…

Articulating the reasons behind their depression is often a labyrinthine task for most individuals. It’s a vague sentiment of futility that pervades. ‘What purpose does existence hold? Why engage, act, traverse, return, labor tirelessly, rush forward?’ A fantasy of swallowing a pill and descending into an endless sleep seems ideal, an everlasting escape.

Depression, once relegated to the realm of nobility and aristocracy, has transformed into a prevalent norm today. The roots of depression can be traced back to a world that appears to have reached its zenith of development. The sensation of being stranded without forward movement, a horizon bereft of ambitious aspirations, nothing to illuminate the path.

Questions of existence loom large: What drives our lives? What fuels our relentless pursuits? Answers, however, remain elusive.

This very void spawns emptiness, frustration, and depression. In eras past, religious promises sufficed; today, human inner desires have evolved, leading to a waning faith in anything or anyone. Additionally, the patience to tolerate fellow beings has dwindled. Thus, families disintegrate, relationships crumble, and individuals are left solitary. Encapsulated in themselves, they gravitate further toward screens. Consequently, even the young bear the weight of depression, wearied by life before they’ve truly begun. A profound certainty that desires will perpetually remain unfulfilled, that an emptiness will persist, becomes their reality.

According to the integral approach, which perceives humanity, society, and nature as an intertwined whole, the remedy for depression rests in a single, profound word: LOVE. This isn’t the ego-driven love centered on self-gratification, but a love for one’s neighbor. Such a love necessitates transcending the self, sensing the needs and wants of others, and yearning to fulfill them. This constitutes love on a higher plane.

When the desires of others eclipse one’s personal yearnings, the very foundation of depression is dismantled. This journey leads to a realm suffused with elation, unity, and wholeness. A natural inclination to elevate others, to imbue their lives with positivity, ensues. Depression dissipates, supplanted by vigor, vitality, and empowerment.

Similar to a devoted mother whose baby’s welfare eclipses her own, and who finds solace in nurturing, nature provides a model of the ideal interpersonal dynamics within society. The contemporary depression emerges as an invitation to propel humanity toward an advanced developmental stage. Concurrently, economic, social, and ecological crises underscore that within the grand tapestry of existence, we’re interdependent. Failing to harmonize will render us all susceptible.

Just as nature unifies, orchestrating its components into an intricate integrated system, humans too must coexist through understanding and connection. Distinct from other creatures driven solely by nature’s impulses, humans possess consciousness and choice.

Embarking on a journey to create a novel type of person, one who can transcend individual desires and embrace the aspirations of others with genuine affection, holds the key. This venture extends beyond the confines of narrow perspectives, culminating in a dimension akin to nature’s omnipresent love. The integral method unveils this process within intimate group settings. Step by step, participants learn to step out of themselves and reside within the hopes and thoughts of others. The age-old adage of loving one’s neighbor as oneself reveals an entryway to an entirely fresh understanding of reality, replete with infinite depths.

In summation, fostering compassion for others remains the sole antidote capable of eradicating depression from our world, ushering in a life marked by goodness, well-being, and happiness for all.”
